Benard L. Mass Instrumental and Music Theory Program

4th & 5th Grades

The Benard L. Maas Instrumental and Music Theory Program is designed to give fourth and fifth grade students the skills they need to be able fully to participate in music programs available at the public and private middle schools in Ann Arbor.

Depending on the size of the classes, they may be subdivided into several groups:

For students with no previous musical training, the students are introduced to the theory of music, the difference between Western music and other types of music, the notes of major and minor scales, musical notation in the treble clef, rhythm, the different instrument families, and music history. In fourth grade all students learn to play the soprano recorder.

Many students at Hebrew Day School are studying music privately. For these students, the program covers more advanced topics in music theory, rhythm and performance appropriate for those children.

The fifth grade is a string instrumental class, where each student studies violin, viola or cello. Students who graduate from the Hebrew Day School are well prepared to fully participate in instrumental music programs at the middle school level.

Additional funding for this program is provided by Galit and Barry Dunietz and Family.
