Hebrew Day School - Ann Arbor, Michigan Judaic and general studies, Immersion Hebrew programs

The Music Program

The Hebrew Day School music program is based on the principle, firmly grounded in scientific studies, that all children are born with musical ability. There are compelling reasons to train children in music during elementary school. Besides the obvious added dimension to a child's life and sheer enjoyment to be derived from singing or playing an instrument, musical training has repeatedly been shown to augment and increase academic performance.

The HDS music program trains all children in singing with appropriate pitch and rhythm starting in the kindergarten. Children have many opportunities for group public performance. In fourth grade children learn to read music and to play the soprano recorder. They are also introduced to music theory and history. Children who are already playing instruments may participate in the Klez Kids klezmer band. In the fifth grade children have the choice of learning violin, viola or cello. Our students graduate with a full range of musical abilities and are well prepared to participate in middle school orchestra, band and choir programs.
