Shabbat Curriculum (Grades 1-5)

All classes celebrate Shabbat at school, from Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) to Havdalah (ushering out the Sabbath and welcoming in the new week).

  • In first and second grades the classes learn the rituals of Kabbalat Shabbat on Fridays, including candle lighting, singing Shalom Aleichem, chanting the Kiddush (blessing over the wine), and reciting blessings over challah. Children sing niggunim (wordless melodies) and dance.
  • In third through fifth grades, Shabbat is celebrated every Friday. Students in the third grade do an in depth study of Havdalah. In the fifth grade, students examine the meaning of Shabbat from several aspects: personal, familial, religious, social and national. Students also learn the midrashim that are connected to the Shabbat. On Monday morning, students participate in a Havdalah ceremony.
  • Participation by family members plays a large role in Shabbat celebrations. Parents are invited to the classroom to share family traditions.
